Mathew Vairamon pays tribute to his father Geevarghese Mathai, who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and later completed 34 years in the Indian Air Force

Mathew Vairamon is the proud son of a Second World War veteran whose life journey reflects discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering service. His father, Geevarghese Mathai, belonged to a generation that witnessed global conflict and historic national transformation.

During the time when India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh were still under British rule, Geevarghese Mathai joined the British Royal Air Force. The world was in the midst of World War II, and young men from the Indian subcontinent were deployed across challenging battlefronts. He served in operations that pushed back the Japanese advance as far as Burma (Myanmar), contributing to one of the most demanding campaigns of the war. Service during that era required courage beyond imagination. Harsh jungle terrain, extreme weather conditions, and constant uncertainty defined the Burma campaign. Yet, like many others of his generation, he carried out his duty with determination and honor.

When India gained independence in 1947, Geevarghese Mathai continued his commitment to service by joining the Indian Air Force. His transition symbolized a bridge between two eras — from colonial rule to a sovereign nation building its own defense forces. Over a remarkable 34-year military career, he served with dedication and professionalism, eventually retiring as a Master Warrant Officer (MWO). His leadership, discipline, and integrity shaped not only his professional path but also the values he instilled in his family.

He passed away in 1991, but his legacy lives on through his son, Mathew Vairamon. The pride of being the son of a World War II veteran is more than a personal identity it is a reminder of sacrifice, resilience, and service to the nation. Today, his story stands as a tribute to a generation that defended freedom during one of the most defining moments in world history and continued to serve their country long after the war ended.
