Have you ever wondered why we have started reacting to even a minor issue aggressively? Why the simplest of conversations became harsh? Why have we stopped being nice to others? It is an unfortunate reality that, we have become less interactive and polite to the people around us.
“It is because of the blood-sucking job that leaves me with no energy to be polite”
This is quite an expected response, whenever someone points out the ill behaviour of a certain person. It might seem normal and legit somehow, but don’t you think it’s unethical? Obviously, I don’t expect people to leave everything and start greeting everyone on their way. However, a simple have a great day would suffice. What do you think?
What are we heading to?
Back in the days, greeting elders was strictly important because it was a way to show respect to them. Similarly, saying sorry and thank you was not as rare as it is now. Unfortunately, things are not same anymore! I’ve seen people losing their temper on petty situations and ending up in gunfights or deaths. You might have heard a lot of similar news on TV as well. Our busy generation – running against time, fighting in ques outside banks for utility bills or ATMs and doing anything for that top position – is losing their ethical values. But, the question is that, why is it happening?
Social media and gadgets have their fair share
Other than busy schedule and tough day-to-day routine, another factor causing this impoliteness is the extensive use of social media that has decreased face-to-face interaction. Many adults and parents complain about their kids using mobile phones or tablets all the time. Some even say their children don’t listen to them just because they are busy on the social media or other instant communication applications.
I admit, social media is a never-ending ocean, and once you get a hang of it; quitting can be a bit tougher than you might think. But, hey, it is never respectful of you eyeing your smartphone while your parents or some elder is having a conversation with you. What do you think?
Basically, we are overwhelmed with the western culture. We have become busy and mean at the same time. You might oppose my rant, but tell me honestly when was the last time you greeted someone passing by with salam and a polite smile? How much time do you spare for your parents who need you the most? When did you prefer a family gathering instead of your friends? These are the basic manners which we are leaving behind in the trial of time. We need to end this together. Even Islam doesn’t preach us to be rude, no matter what your mental state is. Losing your cool will lead you nowhere!
There is a world outside your phones too, just look around. Don’t vent your frustrations. Rather, start a healthy conversation with a simple greeting every day. Do it from today and you will see people being nice to you in return. Will you?
